This Whiskey Auction Features Pappy Van Winkle and Weller Bourbon

We’ve already covered many rare whiskey auctions from big names like Sotheby’s, Bonhams and Christie’s. But a newcomer to the auction world, Unicorn, has also sold some impressive lots of American whiskey in recent years, and the latest includes some rare brands from the Buffalo Trace Distillery that are worth checking out.

Scottish whiskey brands and distilleries like Macallan are getting all the glory in the auction world, as evidenced by last year’s bottle of the 60 year old Macallan 1926 single malt which sold for a record $2 .7 million dollars. But the world of American whiskey is full of highly coveted unicorns, especially when it comes to one name: Buffalo Trace. This Kentucky distillery is home to brands like Pappy Van Winkle (made there in partnership with the Van Winkle family), WL Weller, EH Taylor, and Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.

Recently, Unicorn has set a few American whiskey sales records, which are impressive even if they don’t come close to the magnitude of this bottle of Macallan. In May, a bottle of Very Very Old Fitzgerald 18-year-old “Blackhawk” 121 proof bourbon sold for more than $100,000, then that record was broken a few weeks later by the sale of a six-liter bottle of Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned Copper 1982. bourbon for almost $123,000. There’s no way to know if anything available at auction now will reach these lofty heights, but the range is one that whiskey collectors should keep an eye on.

“Our June no-reserve auction is the perfect representation of what you’ll find on Unicorn every week and why our customers love our platform, whether you’re looking for an ultra rare collector’s bottle or a $20 daily drink.” , said the CEO. and co-founder Phil Mikhaylov in a statement. Some of the highlights include a host of Buffalo Trace labels, like a bottle of Very Very Old Fitzgerald 12 year old bourbon from 1968, a true duster that was distilled in 1956 and bottled in 1968 and contains whiskey produced in Stitzel- Weller, long gone. distillery. If you’re looking for Pappy, there’s a bottle of this 23-year-old from 2008, estimated at $3,000-$4,000. A more recent expression is last year’s Daniel Weller Emmer Wheat Recipe bourbon, an expansion of the WL Weller brand line that was made from a mashbill using an ancient Egyptian wheat grape variety. And this year’s Buffalo Trace Prohibition Whiskey Collection is available in a complete set, a throwback series meant to evoke the days when the distillery had a license to produce medicinal whiskey.

It’s not just about Buffalo Trace whiskey, of course. Other bottles of note include a dusty oddity, the Old Forester Sputnik Bottled-in-Bond Decanter, a four-year-old bourbon from 1956 presented in a bottle that looks like it came from a vault on the show. To fall. And it just wouldn’t be a whiskey auction without at least a little Macallan: here’s The Macallan 22 Year Fine & Rare 1990 from 2013 and The Macallan M from 2015.

In total, there are over 3,400 bundles to choose from, so there’s probably something that will tickle your fancy. This auction ends on June 23 at 7 p.m., so head over to the Unicorn site now to browse the whiskeys (and other spirits) and place a bid if you find something you like.
