Tourist loses leg in gruesome moving walkway accident at airport

WARNING – GRAPHIC CONTENT: Stunned tourists captured the horrific moment a woman had to have her left leg amputated after it was swallowed by a moving walkway at an airport in Thailand.

The unnamed 57-year-old passenger was trying to board a domestic flight from Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport to Nakhon Si Thammarat province when she tripped over her pink suitcase while standing on the plane at around 8:30 a.m. (local time) on Thursday.

She had already checked in and was on her way to the gate when she fell and her leg became trapped in the conveyor belt, with the mechanism tearing muscle, tendons and bone.

Fellow passengers fumbled for the emergency switch as the machine continued to cut through her flesh. Gruesome images show the woman sitting on the moving walkway, her left leg almost completely missing, and her pants and metal rails smeared with blood.

Local media reported that airport officials confirmed that a medical team on site was forced to amputate the tourist’s leg above the knee before taking her to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital for emergency treatment.

Airport authorities have ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the strange accident. In the meantime, the automatic moving walkway has been temporarily closed as an engineering team conducts an inspection and safety checks.

Airport reacts to bizarre accident

A statement from Don Mueang Airport said: “The Don Mueang Airport Director and management visited the patient to check the treatment progress and received information from the medical team at Bhumibol Hospital that she is currently receiving medical treatment.”

“Don Mueang Airport is deeply saddened by the incident and is ready to take full responsibility and deal with the medical costs and compensation.”

The airport also announced that there were no flight delays due to the accident.

Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) opened in 1914, but was replaced in 2014 by the new Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) on the outskirts of the city.
