Hard night for Caitlin

The Indiana Fever’s struggles continued Monday night as they lost 89-72 to the Connecticut Sun. It was the 11th straight series victory for the Sun, further highlighting the Fever’s woes (3-10 record).

Indiana’s leading scorer, Caitlin Clark, had a frustrating night. Limited to just 10 points on 3 of 8 shooting (all in the first half), her impact was minimal.

A fourth foul in the third quarter ended his night prematurely, leaving the Fever offense shorthanded. The crowd outside even chanted for Caitlin Clark WNBA to return to the game.

The turning point of the match came just before halftime. With Clark stripped near midcourt, DiJonai Carrington raced down the court for a buzzer-beating layup, extending the Sun’s lead to 55-35.

That capped a dominant 16-4 run for Connecticut before the break. Their momentum continued into the third with a 14-6 surge, closing the door on any potential Fever comeback.

Despite a solid effort from Aliyah Boston, who recorded a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds), the Fever simply could not overcome the Sun’s well-rounded attack.

DeWanna Bonner (17 points) and Carrington (season-high 22 points) led the way for Connecticut, while Alyssa Thomas narrowly missed another triple-double.

Embarrassing loss

The Atlanta Dream are coming off their own embarrassing loss, where they lost 68-87 to the (then) winless Washington Mystics. Despite a valiant effort from Rhyne Howard, who became the youngest player to reach 200 career 3-pointers (16 points), the Dream could not overcome Washington’s precise shooting.

The Mystics came out strong, chasing hard for their first win, and the Dream were never quite able to follow up. While the Dream managed to narrow the gap slightly in the second quarter, a dominant third period from Washington sealed the deal.

Sykes, Karlie Samuelson and Stefanie Dolson combined for three quick shots to open the quarter, extending the Mystics’ lead and putting the game out of reach.

Although Allisha Gray, Atlanta’s leading scorer, had a quiet night (9 points), the contributions of Howard (16 points), Aerial Powers (13 points) and Tina Charles (12 points, 9 rebounds) did not not enough to defeat Washington’s assault.

Atlanta favored on the road

  • Atlanta is a -3.5 road favorite and -150 favorite to win the game outright. The Fever are at +130 to accomplish the surprise. The game total is set at 162.5.
  • Over the last ten games, the Fever are 3-7 in a row, 4-6 ATS and 2-2 ATS at home. The Dreams are 5-5 in a row, 4-6 against the spread and 3-1 on the road.

The Dream have been better than the Fever all season, but their recent loss gives us reason to pause. Take the Fever +3.5 home. They’ve been playing decently lately, and while they’re routinely getting blown out by the WNBA’s top teams, the dream is far from it.
