The Houston Texans need to stop teasing us about JJ Watts’ return

We want JJ Watt back. I doubt there’s anyone who doesn’t want to see Watt take one last victory lap with the Texans. His departure several years ago was a mistake and his time with the Arizona Cardinals not only showed that he was still a very good player, but also how horrible it was to see him in the colors of ‘a different team.

Bringing him home has to happen. After all, he’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer and someone the fandom still adores today. He’s without a doubt the best player in franchise history and he’s the one guy no one wanted when he was drafted. His return to a team with eyes on a deep playoff run would make the season an all-time classic. A certainly unforgettable memory.

If it doesn’t happen it won’t hurt the season, the team is full, the hype is real and we’re all locked in. The problem is that people keep hoping. First it was Watt, then Texans head coach and Watt’s ex-teammate DeMeco Ryans, and now finally, it’s the general manager of the team itself.

Speaking to Up & Adams on Thursday (via CBS Sports), Texans general manager Nick Caserio refused to close the door on Watt not retiring and joining the Texans in 2024, saying:

” “I think JJ has enough on his plate right now. Once the season starts, I think that’s when the competition starts. DeMeco has an open door policy for JJ, so we’ll see how that goes.

Watt has no need to return to the club as it currently stands. The team needs a defensive tackle more than anything and if they can’t get one, adding another defensive end won’t help matters. Watt could move to defensive tackle and help the team greatly, but that’s just a pipe dream at this point.

So even though the team doesn’t need Watt, we want him back. At least for one more run. If he doesn’t want to come back, the Texans need to stop teasing us with him. His absence will not hinder the team in any way but he will bring a lot of hope and joy to a team that is already fed up with everyone.

Still, the teases about his return could only do more to hamper the fandom’s hype. So bring it back or not, but stop being shy about it.
