Panthers sign HC-bound TE Dave Canales

The Carolina Panthers and head coach Dave Canales had to restock their tight end cap space once again.

As announced Sunday, the team signed veteran Jacob Hollister. The 30-year-old is Carolina’s latest addition at tight end, which has struggled with injuries to Tommy Tremble, Ian Thomas and Stephen Sullivan this summer.

A native of Bend, Oregon, Hollister played college football at the University of Wyoming from 2014 to 2016. There, he rushed for 1,114 yards and 12 touchdowns on 75 receptions.

Hollister then broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2017. He stuck around in Foxboro for his first two campaigns, catching eight passes for 94 yards.

His best professional football, at least so far, would come with his arrival at the Seattle Seahawks, for whom he totaled 558 yards and six scores on 66 receptions between 2019 and 2020. Hollister would also cross paths with a few current Panthers coaches, including Canales, offensive coordinator Brad Idzik and tight ends coach Pat McPherson.

He has since played for the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders and Minnesota Vikings, as well as a second spot for Seattle.

To make room for Hollister, the Panthers released/injured rookie receiver Devin Carter.
