South Fremantle Football Club player Nick Campo killed in car crash in North Lake

A teenager is on trial charged with a fatal car crash in south Perth that left a young football player dead and five other people injured.

The 17-year-old boy was reportedly driving a work vehicle on Farrington Road in North Lake on Saturday evening when the vehicle crashed, overturned and collided with another car.

One of the passengers, an 18-year-old man, died at the scene of the accident.

The driver and two other male passengers, aged 17 and 18, were taken to hospital with injuries.

The two occupants of the other vehicle, a 26-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, were also injured.

The driver appeared in court by telephone from the hospital. He was charged with six offences, including dangerous driving causing death.

He was granted bail until September 10, on the condition that he not drive a motor vehicle and not make contact with any of the occupants of his car at the time of the accident.

Numerous honours for young football players

The South Fremantle Football Club released a statement on social media on Sunday announcing that several of its players were involved in the accident, including 18-year-old Nick Campo, who died.

“We are a club that is deeply shocked and whose focus is on supporting our players, staff and their families in these tragic circumstances,” the statement said.

The Cockburn Junior Football Club and the Railways Football Club in Kalgoorlie also paid tribute to him.

“Nick was a beloved friend to many at Railways,” the statement said.

“A life full of promise that ended far too soon.”

Nick Campo was also a successful young cricketer. The Fremantle District Cricket Club described him as “an incredibly popular and well-liked port boy who had such a bright and exciting future ahead of him.”

“Everyone at Fremantle Cricket Club would like to extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to the Campo family and we offer our unconditional support to the entire Port family at this sad time.”
