Man arrested for sexual assault in Memphis library: police

A man is accused of attempting to assault a woman in a public library in Memphis, police in the state of Tennessee said.

A man is accused of sexual abuse a woman Tennessee State Police told news agencies that he was accused of exposing himself to them in a library restroom.

Kevin Standberry, 35, was arrested on attempted rape and sexual assault charges in connection with the July 1 incident at the Cossitt Library in Memphis, WHBQ reported, citing police.

The woman told officers Standberry followed her into a restroom and began kissing her and fondling her breasts, according to WREG. She was able to break free and went to another area of ​​the library.

A short time later, the woman said she wanted to go back to the bathroom to get her things, WHBQ reported. Standberry was still inside and allegedly exposed himself to her, police said, according to the station.

He is also accused of grabbing the woman and attempting to have sex with her, police told WMC. She escaped a second time and ran out of the restroom.

According to WHBQ, a security guard arrested Standberry and called police after observing him leaving the ladies’ restroom.

In response to the incident, Memphis Public Libraries said they planned to “increase security at all locations.”

“We are grateful for the response of the security officer who arrested the suspect and for the quick action by the Memphis Police Department,” Director Keenon McCloy said in a statement to WMC. “We are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for customers.”

Standberry was jailed on $100,000 bail, WREG reported.
