Bus hits construction worker on Anson Road; driver suspended

SINGAPORE: An SMRT bus driver has been suspended after a worker was involved in an accident near a construction site on Anson Road on Thursday (June 27).

Videos are circulating on social media showing the 33-year-old worker placing a traffic cone in the far left lane of Anson Road before turning his back on traffic.

He was then struck and run over by the bus that was turning from Palmer Road.

After the impact, the worker managed to get up and get back on his feet with the help of the bus driver and another worker.

Police said they were notified of the accident at around 5:25 p.m. and the worker was taken to hospital in a conscious state.

SMRT said the 48-year-old bus driver was suspended from duty following the accident on route 970 and that there were no passengers on the bus at the time.

“Our dedicated support team is in contact with the worker to offer assistance and support,” said Vincent Gay, deputy general manager of SMRT Buses, adding that they are assisting the police with the investigation.

CNA has contacted the Ministry of Labor for further information.
