2 people charged after death of Genesee County sergeant

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two people have been indicted on multiple counts in connection with the death of a Genesee County sheriff’s sergeant in March, the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office announced.

In March, Sgt. Thomas Sanfratello was working at Batavia Downs when he was notified of an alleged verbal confrontation. He and members of the property’s security personnel responded and began escorting Michael Elmore, 33, and Lyndsey Wilcox, 39, out of the hotel, according to officials.


Officials said that during an alleged fight with Elmore, Sanfratello attempted to use a stun gun, but suffered a fatal “medical event.”

Before the medical event, Elmore allegedly hit Sanfratello in the head and face with a metal collar.

Sanfratello, 54, had been a member of the sheriff’s office since 1992.

Elmore was indicted on the following charges:

  • first degree aggravated manslaughter
  • homicide by aggravated criminal negligence
  • first degree assault
  • second degree burglary (two counts)
  • second degree assault
  • obstruction of government administration

Wilcox, who was also charged in the incident, was charged with the following counts:

  • second degree burglary
  • second degree assault
  • obstruction of government administration
  • resist arrest
