Atlanta water main rupture; live updates

A major water main break that began Friday on a busy Atlanta street continues to cause significant disruption.

ATLANTA — Following a water main break Friday in Atlanta, many households and businesses in Midtown and Downtown are without water.

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said it happened when three different pipes came together and carried a large amount of water around the city to different areas. This caused water outages and low water pressure across much of the downtown area.

Since then, teams have been working non-stop to resolve the issue, but there is still no timeline for restoring everything. Here are the latest updates regarding the water main break.

Saturday June 1st

9:30 a.m. | Nearly 10 Fulton County libraries will be closed Saturday due to a broken water main. The locations are:

  • Auburn Avenue Research
  • Central
  • East Atlanta
  • Kirkwood
  • Louise Watley @ South East
  • Mécaniqueville
  • Metropolitan
  • Washington Park
  • west end

8:30 a.m. | The Georgia Aquarium said it would close for the day while the city dealt with the break.

Zoo Atlanta informed members that the location would not have water fountains or charging stations. The zoo also said it would not sell fountain drinks or other concessions.

Boil water advisory still in effect

Following the recent water main break, the city’s boil water advisory remains in effect. Residents are reminded to boil their water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking or brushing their teeth to avoid potential contamination. The advisory, which was put in place as a precautionary measure, will remain in effect until water quality tests confirm the supply is fit for consumption.
