SLCPD is conducting a homicide investigation in the Ballpark District

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 19, 2024 – Salt Lake City Police are investigating a homicide in the Ballpark neighborhood.

“This investigation began at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2024, when SLC911 received information about a possible death at a home near Van Buren Avenue and Main Street,” a PR statement said -Salt Lake City PD Department.

“Officers arrived and found a 34-year-old man and a six-year-old boy dead in the home.

“This case is being investigated as a murder-suicide with a firearm.”

The 34-year-old man was identified as Samuel Owen.

Investigators believe Owen killed his son and then shot himself.

The six-year-old boy’s name will not be released in accordance with Utah Code 53-25-101, the SLCPD public relations statement said.

“This is a very tragic moment for our community,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. “These are some of the most difficult calls our officers, detectives, crime lab technicians, victim advocates and social workers have to handle. My condolences and prayers go out to those affected by this loss.”

Investigators from the Salt Lake City Police Department Homicide Unit are leading this investigation.

This is the fourth murder in Salt Lake City in 2024.
