Shooting at Lions-Buccaneers tailgate party leaves one dead, another in critical condition

Shooting at Lions-Buccaneers tailgate party leaves one dead, another in critical condition

Initial reports indicate the shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. EST and began with an argument between two fans who were preparing to engage in a physical altercation. One of the two then pulled out a gun and opened fire, resulting in the death of a fan in his 40s and injuries to another fan in his 20s. The injured fan was hospitalized and is reportedly in critical condition.

Detroit Police Chief James White said shortly thereafter that the perpetrator, a man in his thirties who is now in custody, was from Oak Park and that the altercation began in one of the buildings at Eastern Market, known as Shed 6.

“There was a big fight that broke up after a few minutes,” White said at a press conference, adding that two weapons were seized at the scene.

“They gathered a few feet from where the first brawl had started. The two fighters raised their hands as if they were going to fight each other … one of the fighters, an Oak Park man, pulled out a gun and fired at least twice. Two people were hit.”

Thanks to the significant police presence already in place, the violence was stopped without any further casualties. White further expressed his displeasure that the suspect brought a weapon to a sporting event where alcohol was involved, and stated that the suspect would face “very serious charges.”

“Driving, drinking, guns, they don’t mix,” White said. “It’s a beautiful day. It shouldn’t have led to this.”

It’s ridiculous. If you want to fight, fight. Fight to live another day, right?” White added.

“But everyone has to have a gun, it makes them feel tough. Unfortunately, two people were shot, one is dead and we have a suspect in custody who is facing some very serious charges.”

Police continue to investigate the crime.
