Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” attacked liberals who sharply criticized actress Cheryl Hines for remaining loyal to her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after his support for former President Trump last month.

“Going after the wife? Not even the mafia does that,” Maher commented on the last episode of his HBO talk show.

HBO host Bill Maher sharply criticized actress Cheryl Hines’ haters who ridiculed her after her husband RFK Jr. supported former President Donald Trump.

Hines, one of the co-stars of the HBO series “Drop It, Larry!”, faced a barrage of criticism after sharing an X-post on August 23 expressing his support for Kennedy and his campaign team following their decision. The statement read in part: “The decision has been made to suspend the presidency of my husband, Robert Kennedy Jr., and I want to express my sincere, heartfelt gratitude to all of the people who worked so tirelessly and lovingly on his campaign.”

Hines’ statement seemed conciliatory, considering the actress is not a fan of Trump. Several days after she posted it, Kennedy told TMZ that his wife stands by his decision, even though she didn’t want it.

“This is the opposite of what she wanted to do,” he told the outlet, adding, “She went along with it because she loves me and wanted to support me, but I would say it was not something she ever encouraged.”

Hines’ post not only received millions of views, but also drew angry reactions from leftists who were upset that she had not publicly denounced her husband for his support of Trump.

Maher lashed out at those angry social media users on Friday night, calling them bullies and saying they had exposed an “ugliness” to liberals that he had never seen before.

Maher began by describing how highly Hines is thought of in Hollywood, quoting Larry David, the creator and star of “Cut It, Larry,” who said she was “the best person I’ve ever met. The only person in Hollywood who doesn’t have a single enemy.”

The presenter then commented: “Well, now she knows because she didn’t throw her husband under the bus when he made a decision about something she made clear she didn’t agree with.”

“But that did not satisfy the disgusting blowhards of the far left mentioned above,” he added, then read several posts criticizing Hines, including one from “West Wing” actor Bradley Whitford.

“West Wing” star Bradley Whitford attacked “Drop It, Larry!” star Cheryl Hines after her husband RFK Jr. suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed former President Trump in the 2024 election.

A day after Kennedy endorsed Trump, Whitford attacked Hines on X, saying, “Hey @CherylHines you stay silent while your crazy husband supports a convicted rapist who brags about taking away women’s basic rights. Brave. A great example for the kids. A brave profile.”

The “Real Time” presenter grilled Whitford. “You know what I don’t think is brave? Telling a woman – but not to her face, of course – that she should sacrifice her marriage just so you can read something you like on Twitter.”

He criticized these reactions in general, continuing: “You want to know why I get more upset about the left today than I used to? It’s like this. They have an ugliness that they never had before. The liberals I respected as a child were all not like that.”

Elsewhere, he added: “There are a lot of people these days who I theoretically call liberals. In theory, they hate bullying. Terrible. In practice, however, their attitude is: It’s not bullying if I stick your head in the toilet.”

The comedian took another swipe at Whitford, saying, “In theory, liberals are compassionate. In practice, this guy can’t even understand one of the most basic dilemmas that all people face: that when you’re married, sometimes you have to take some shit.”
