Famous Northern Lights appear in parts of Western New York

Western New York got to see quite a spectacle in the sky overnight, as the famous Northern Lights were visible in parts of the region.

This is a geomagnetic phenomenon that is not always visible this far south. A violent solar storm triggered these colorful auroras that could be seen as far south as Alabama.

The Space Weather Prediction Center says at least five coronal mass ejections have been directed toward Earth. These explosions of plasmas and magnetic fields coming from the solar corona create the storm.

If strong enough, storms could impact infrastructure, potentially disrupting communications, the power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.
