After a nearby shooting, a school in Dorchester switches to online classes

A school in Dorchester is temporarily switching to online classes due to a shooting at a nearby T-station.

According to multiple reports, Neighborhood House Charter School has suspended in-person classes for students in grades 8 through 11 until June 14. Executive Director Kate Scott reportedly made the decision after shots were fired at Shawmut Station, which is around the corner from the school’s Center Street campus.

“Although there have been no incidents on our campus, many of our students commute to and from school using the MBTA,” Scott said in a statement to The Boston Herald“Last Friday, multiple shots were fired at the Shawmut T-Station. Police believe one of our students, who is not currently attending school in person, was the intended target.

School leaders learned that individuals associated with the suspected shooters in the Shawmut incident “told members of our community that they intended to return,” the statement said. These alleged attackers are not students at NHCS.

The seniors have already left for summer vacation. NHCS also serves younger students at another location on Queen Street. The last day of school is scheduled for June 21, according to a calendar posted on the NHCS website.

School officials did not respond to requests for comment on Friday.

To make the change, the NHCS had to get approval from the state’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Officials approved the request, the Herald.

Last year, the same campus was cordoned off several times after a group of adults allegedly threatened nearby students, according to The Dorchester Reporter.

The MBTA Transit Police, Boston Police Department and a team from Concrete Protective Services are also working with the school to provide additional security when students and staff are there.
