How to protect your property TODAY before more severe weather hits the Houston area tomorrow

With recent severe weather and flooding, Houstonians are looking for ways to protect their homes from the elements.

Storms will return Thursday with areas around Houston at risk of flooding. Our northern cities are most at risk, but all of Houston faces at least some threat of street flooding. Meteorologist Anthony Yanez estimates precipitation totals of 1-3″ are possible with higher amounts of 5-7″ north of I-10.

Here’s what you can do today to protect your property before tomorrow’s storms:

  • Check your roof for loose shingles and leaks to avoid major damage.

  • Make sure your plumbing system is well maintained to avoid flooding and sewage backups.

  • Avoid covering AC units during flooding to avoid the risk of electrocution.

  • Stock up on essential supplies like water, canned food, flashlights, and medicine to survive the storm and its aftermath.

  • Prepare for your pets’ needs with enough food, water, medicine, and a pet carrier, and keep a current photo of them in case they get lost.

Additionally, here are some tips from the Texas Severe Storms Association for dealing with flash flooding:

  • Leave your vehicle immediately if it stalls in floodwaters and move to higher ground.

  • Keep away from flooded streams, streams or drainage ditches, especially children, as flowing water can be dangerous.

  • Act quickly, as rising water levels can make escape difficult and waterlogged banks may collapse.
