Orelvis Martinez suspended two days after his MLB debut for the Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto Blue Jays prospect and rising infielder Orelvis Martinez has had his major league dreams put on hold just two days after his highly anticipated debut. Major League Baseball has suspended Martinez for 80 games after he tested positive for a banned substance.

The suspension was announced on social media on Sunday after he tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug clomiphene. Martinez then released a statement through the MLB Players Association, explaining that he took the drug as part of his efforts to start a family.

“For two years I have been trying to start a family with my girlfriend. During the off-season we visited a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic and after laboratory tests we were prescribed a treatment that included a drug called Rejun 50,” Martinez wrote. “Unfortunately, Rejun 50 contains a banned substance called clomiphene.”

“We also wanted to keep this matter private within our family and trusted the doctor who assured us that this treatment did not involve any performance-enhancing drugs. Therefore, I made the mistake of not communicating this to my team or the MLBPΑ. With this in mind, I took full responsibility for my actions and accepted my suspension.

“I want to apologize to my teammates in Buffalo and Toronto, the Blue Jays organization and most importantly, the fans who have supported me throughout my career,” he continued. “I will learn from this experience and return to the field in September.”

The Blue Jays released a statement supporting MLB’s decision to suspend their promising young infielder. The organization issued the following statement: “We were both surprised and disappointed to learn of Orelvis Martinez’s suspension. We will do everything in our power to ensure Orelvis learns from this mistake,” the statement continued. “Orelvis has our support and we know he will get through this.”

Martinez showcased his talent at the Triple-A level with the Buffalo Bisons, posting a .260 batting average, .343 on-base percentage and .523 slugging percentage. His dynamic hitting included 16 home runs and 46 RBIs in 235 at-bats.

He played 55 games with the Bisons, hitting 11 home runs and 48 RBIs, cementing his status as a rising star. The promising prospect played just one game with the Blue Jays last Friday against the Cleveland Guardians. He hit 1 for 3 and had a .333 batting average early in his career until his return.
