Woman charged with fake assault and stabbing on Queen Creek Trail

QUEEN CREEK, AZ (AZFamily) – A woman was arrested after she filed a false report about a stabbing on an East Valley hiking trail early last month, according to police.

According to Queen Creek Police, 39-year-old Megan Campbell reported that the attack occurred on Sunday, May 5, near Crismon and Riggs roads.

Campbell said she was suddenly attacked from behind while jogging and then knocked unconscious. During the altercation, she claimed he stabbed her in the neck, according to police.

However, according to investigators, Campbell became “uncommunicative” early in the investigation and stated that she would no longer participate in the investigation.

Investigators investigated further and said they noticed a “significant pattern” of discrepancies. They ultimately concluded that Campbell had fabricated the entire incident and found previous incidents that revealed a “pattern of harassment” of a person she had previously had a relationship with.

Queen Creek police arrested Campbell on Thursday on charges of identity theft, false statements and harassment (domestic violence). Those charges will be forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. A photo of the arrest was not immediately released.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are disturbing, frustrating and tragic,” said Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice. “The actions committed by this individual not only victimized another individual, but also tied up police resources that could have been used for a better purpose. Unfortunately, this false report has created fear about a crime that never occurred.”

Arizona’s family had previously tried to speak to Campbell, but he declined due to “privacy reasons.”
