According to a news release from the National Park Service, Judy Henderson-Bailey, 69, of Topeka, Kansas, was floating the river in a kayak on May 19, when she struck a tree around 5 p.m. The release said Henderson-Bailey’s kayak overturned and the current pulled her under a submerged tree, where she was trapped. The statement said the people she was with attempted to pull her out of the water, but were unsuccessful. He said Henderson-Bailey was not wearing a life jacket. The National Parks Service release said the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and Hasty Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene. According to the statement, river levels were considered “low” at the time of the incident.
