Men accused of murdering young Dolph face trial

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The murder trial of famed Memphis rapper Young Dolph begins September 23.

The suspects accused of killing the rapper, Hernandez Govan, Justin Johnson and Cornelius Smith, are all charged with murder.

Johnson and Smith are accused of firing the shots that killed the famous rapper, while Govan is accused of conspiring and planning the murder.

We know that Johnson and Smith are both currently incarcerated in the Shelby County Jail, while Govan has been out on bail for a year.

Since Govan has been out on bail, he has gotten into trouble in Southaven, Mississippi.

He was arrested in Southaven on charges of driving with a suspended license and having an improperly mounted license plate.

He also had an arrest warrant out of Desoto for “criminal harassment, stalking or repeated threats.”

Young Dolph was shot and killed at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies.

Owners Pamela and Maurice Hil spoke to us before the trial about how life and business have been since the murder and how the community supports them.

They say it’s been tough, especially the days after young Dolph’s death. They say things have gotten better since then and they too are waiting for justice for Dolph.

“Some people come here and start crying. It’s just beautiful to see his fans come out and support the business that he loved to visit and taste the cookies and they fall in love themselves,” Hill said.

On November 17, 2021, Young Dolph went to his Airways store. Shortly after, upon entering the store, masked gunmen stopped and fired dozens of shots, killing Dolph.

They say things have been different since they last saw him come to the store.

I’m just glad they caught these guys and I’m ready to see some justice.

“We have our t-shirts ready to wear on Monday in support of justice for Young Dolph. We are constantly praying for the family and just hoping that justice will be served,” the owners said.

Jurors will be bused in from other counties to hear the case.
