WEST CARTHAGE, NY (WWNY/Gray News) – A helicopter crash that killed a New York businessman a week and a half ago was caused by a wasp nest, investigators say.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said its investigation found that the nest had clogged one of the helicopter’s fuel lines.

The findings were detailed in a preliminary NTSB investigation report.

The crash occurred on Saturday, July 27, in West Carthage, New York.

The victim was identified as 65-year-old Gary Johnson. Officials said Johnson was the plane’s pilot and the only person on board at the time of the crash.

During the investigation, the NTSB stated that a metal fuel tank had been emptied, causing fuel to leak sporadically.

Officials examined the fuel vent pipe and flushed out debris that was believed to be consistent with a mud wasp nest.

According to the report, the helicopter had not flown for three weeks, said one of Johnson’s brothers.
