Buffalo Bill Museum to highlight ‘women of history’ at fundraising tea party

LECLAIRE, Iowa (KWQC) – The Buffalo Bill Museum in LeClaire presents several “Women in History” events, including fundraiser, American Apple Tea Party with “The Harvey Girls – The Women Who Tamed the Far West,” on Saturday, May 11 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Grasshopper Gatherings, 208 North Cody Road in LeClaire.

Carol Kenealy will tell the story of a nearly forgotten chapter in American history. about how Fred Harvey built his restaurant empire along the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad. This motivated thousands of young women to leave their Eastern homes to work in his restaurants.

Although they didn’t know it at the time, the Harvey Girls were making history by marrying ranchers, cowboys, farmers and railroad workers to raise families and work the land. These women played an important role in how the western frontier was settled.

As host of the event, the folks at the Buffalo Bill Museum will wear period clothing and encourage attendees to do the same. Homemade apple pie (ala mode, of course) will be served with tea or coffee.

To purchase tickets ($25), visit here.
