Houston News Crime: Woman Accidentally Shot By Friend

Houston police said the teen was sitting in a car with at least three other people when a gun went off.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — An 18-year-old girl was taken to the hospital Friday after she was shot in the Hastings High School parking lot, according to Houston police.

Police said the teen and at least three other people were sitting in a car in the high school parking lot. Someone in the back seat was playing with a gun, and at one point the gun went off, hitting the 18-year-old who was in the driver’s seat, police said.

“At this point, we think it would be better if it was accidental or negligent,” said Lt. Larry Crowson of the Houston Police Department.

Those in the car were able to move the injured teen from the driver’s seat and take her to West Oaks Urgent Care on Highway 6 near Westheimer Road. The teen was then taken to hospital where police said they expected her to survive.

Houston police are working with Alief ISD police to obtain surveillance video. They are also trying to determine if the victim and others in the car were students.
