USPS South Houston processing center in Missouri city upgrades sorting equipment; invites Re’Chelle Turner on tour

MISSOURI CITY – For months, KPRC2 has been bringing you countless stories about problems with the U.S. Postal Service in the Houston area.

Since December, KPRC2’s Re’Chelle Turner, Corley Peel, Amy Davis and Rilwan Balogun have spoken to families who have had to wait weeks, and in some cases months, to get gifts, packages and medicine. Turner sent care packages to sister stations KPRC 2, WDIV in Detroit and KSAT in San Antonio, showing people in real time where the packages were. Our package to San Antonio arrived 5 days late and the mail from Detroit arrived 6 days late.

The USPS said the reason for the delays was that the Postal Service was in the process of modernizing its mail system.

On Thursday, the USPS invited Turner to the South Houston Local Processing Center (LPC) located at 611 Hwy. 90 A in Missouri City, TX 77489 for a visit. She will get a behind-the-scenes look at the new processing facility. It includes new technologies such as high-speed sorting equipment.

What steps to take if you think your mail has been stolen or is missing

Before the tour, Turner and photojournalist Oscar Chavez will interview Irene Ramirez. In January, she spoke at a news conference with Congressman Al Green about her 89-year-old father, Daniel Ramirez, who was waiting weeks to receive his heart medication.

Ramirez told Turner the new upgrades are necessary, but she still doesn’t have confidence in the Postal Service’s ability to get back on track.

Chavez and Turner will have updates throughout the newscast at 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

If you or someone you know is still having problems with the post office or has never received an important package, email Turner at [email protected].
