Slight cooling, isolated thunderstorms ahead

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Today’s forecast: A weak cold front moving slowly south through the area should provide a slight cooling of the increased humidity in the areas near and north of the motorways. However, it will still be very hot, with highs again above 35 degrees in many areas.

Although storms tend to be isolated, storms that do develop could be strong. The main concerns are damaging winds and hail. A Level 1/5 (minor) risk of severe weather is reported for most of our observation area.

Rest of this week

The front won’t be particularly severe, but should at least help our highs drop back closer to normal in the second half of the week. Instead of record and record highs, we’ll see temperatures between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius. Humidity will also be a little lower, meaning the heat index won’t be as much of an issue.

The front also makes for a difficult forecast in terms of rain chances. The location of the boundary on a given day will have an important influence on where the chance of rain is highest. The general pattern will favor storm complexes forming in Texas and moving eastward along that boundary. With that in mind, isolated storms are possible on a daily basis, with some strong storms not ruled out.

Expanded outlook

Saturday 1 June officially marks the start of meteorological summer for us and it looks like our weather will be typical for the summer months. Maximum temperatures will be just above 30 degrees for most of this weekend and into early next week, with isolated thunderstorms occurring mainly in the afternoon.

Rainfall

A rather dry spell of weather we have experienced over the past week and a half should come to an end in the coming days. While nothing excessive is expected, the 7-day rainfall total is expected to average 1 to 1.5 inches across much of our region, with locally higher amounts quite possible where storms develop.
