Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for “Jesus Christ Superstar” in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends through their shared love of the Beatles and, of course, singing.

After the 10:30 a.m. performances, they played in pizzerias, cafes and nightclubs with just one guitar and two voices. They quickly gained a reputation for their great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was constantly writing. They made a demo on cassette of two songs, “Love and Other Bruises” and “If You Knew Me” and took it to all the record labels in Sydney. Everyone refused except one – CBS Records – who admired their unique style.

They made a single in one afternoon and it went to number one on the national charts. Air supply is born! The same year they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and then the United States and Canada, playing all the big famous venues before Rod took the stage. They found new fans but failed to break into the American market.

Back in Australia they had to start again and recorded a record called Life Support. On that disc were some treasure troves of songs, including “Lost in Love” which went Top 10 in Australia and found its way to music industry executive Clive Davis in New York.

Clive immediately signed Air Supply to Arista Records and in 1980, “Lost in Love” became the world’s best-selling single, rising to the top of every chart. The air supply was now on its way. The second single was “All Out of Love”, and it climbed the charts even faster.

Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply had by this time equaled the Beatles’ streak of five consecutive singles. The albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever and The Greatest Hits have sold over 20 million copies. “Lost in Love” was named song of the year in 1980 and, along with the other singles, sold over 10 million copies.

The signature sound of Russell Hitchcock’s soaring tenor voice and Graham Russell’s simple yet majestic songs created a unique sound that will forever be known as Air Supply.

However, it is the live shows that still captivate audiences around the world. They were the first Western band to tour China, Taiwan and countless other countries that previously did not allow pop music to cross their borders. In 1983, they recorded Jim Steinman’s “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” which solidified the group as a continuing force in modern music. This song was released on the album The Greatest Hits which sold over 7 million copies.

“Lost in Love”, “All Out of Love”, “The One That You Love”, “Sweet Dreams” and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” have each been played several million times on the radio.

In 1986, the band’s music was still playing endlessly on the radio. That same year, Graham was married to actress Jodi Varble of Rochelle, Illinois, who was also his leading lady in the music video for “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All”.

Air Supply began touring with lavish productions in places no one had gone before. In South America and Asia, they have become part of everyone’s lives. In 1988, Air Supply were invited to participate in Australia’s Bicentennial celebration and perform for HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Diana, where they learned that both were already avid fans. This commitment would be one of the most precious moments of their career.

In 1989, they recorded the album “The Earth Is”, which sold more than a million copies outside the United States. This album was followed by the CD “The Vanishing Race” and, with the singles “Goodbye” and “It’s Never Too Late”, it again saw multiple-platinum hits. Subsequent albums, “News from Nowhere”, “Yours Truly” and “Across the Concrete Sky”, all took their second biggest hit to multi-platinum status as they toured the world each year.

In 2000, a new production company was founded to focus on all of Air Supply’s future product, called A Nice Pear, which gave them complete creative control.

In July 2005, their live DVD “It Was 30 Years Ago Today” celebrated 30 years of worldwide success and that same month, Air Supply broke attendance records when, in Cuba, during a concert, they played in front of 175,000 people. 2005 also saw the release of “The Singer and the Song”, an acoustic album of many of their biggest hits which received critical acclaim.

In May 2010, the long-awaited album “Mumbo Jumbo” – also the duo’s first studio recording in eight years – was released. Recorded at Graham Russell’s studio near Park City, Utah and Odds On’s state-of-the-art facility in Las Vegas with top session musicians and an orchestra, “Mumbo Jumbo” was produced by Russell and engineered by Sean O’Dwyer of Odds On, whose credits include Pink Floyd, Randy Newman and Blink-182. Among the 14 tracks, released by the Odds On label, was lead single “Dance With Me,” which earned Air Supply a major feature article in Billboard magazine titled “Still Supplying The Hits After 35 Years.”

Just weeks after songwriter and singer Graham Russell received a BMI Million-Air certificate recognizing 3 million performances of the duo’s hit “All Out Of Love,” Air Supply’s new song was the most added song to the FMQB AC40 chart, and also one of the most added to the AC R&R (Radio and Records) chart and the Mediabase AC chart.

In 2013, the duo were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame. Air Supply celebrated its 40th anniversaryth anniversary in 2015 and continues to delight audiences around the world.
