AAPI Heritage Month: The man behind Atlanta United’s special edition scarf

“I was watching United’s year and campaign, the Phoenix came to mind. It is the symbol of the city. It’s on our secondary kit at the moment. Then I was also thinking about 2024 and being of Chinese origin myself, the lunar calendar says that it is the year of the dragon. In Asian culture, the symbolism of a Phoenix and a Dragon meeting represents harmony. I thought it was a clever way to integrate my story and that of Atlanta United and dive deeper into the dragon room.

The dragon symbol also has personal meaning for Larry. His father, William, is one of his biggest supporters, especially during a formative period of Larry’s life. After completing his undergraduate studies at Emory University in Atlanta, Larry then decided to dive in head first and pursue a career in the arts, which involved going to a rather than in a business school. This may frighten some parents, but Larry’s father responded with complete and unwavering support.

Her father’s Chinese zodiac sign is also the dragon.

“I found an opportunity to pay tribute to my father and all the support he gave me,” says Larry. “Even if you don’t know my father’s story, I hope this scarf still resonates. But, for me, it’s nice to be able to make it a little more personal. I can’t wait to give him one.
