Levine Cava calls for ‘full investigation’ into Virginia Gardens training exercise fire as family mourns MDFR instructor’s son – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

VIRGINIA GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) – Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is calling for an investigation after the son of a Miami-Dade Fire Department instructor died during a training demonstration in Virginia Gardens.

The mayor made the announcement about the fire Friday morning in a statement released Saturday. It read:

“I have asked our Director of Public Safety to conduct a full investigation into yesterday’s events and a comprehensive review of protocols and practices – to ensure we are doing everything possible to prevent an incident like this in the future and to ensure the safety of our firefighters and first responders.”

Levine Cava’s statement comes at a time when friends, family and the firefighting community mourn the loss of the 28-year-old victim.

On a GoFundMe page set up for his family, they wrote:

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the loss of our firefighter brother Francisco Camero’s beloved son, Fabian Giovanni Camero, who tragically passed away on Saturday, June 22nd. Fabian was a brave and dedicated young man who passionately followed in his father’s footsteps to serve and protect our community.”

Francisco Camero, an MDFR instructor, was seen Saturday outside the Ryder Trauma Center, where his son was flown in by helicopter after being rescued from a burning building on Northwest 36th Street, near 66th Avenue.

On Sunday evening, a fire engine was still parked in front of the building where the fire had broken out.

According to Miami-Dade police, it started during a fire drill involving firefighters from Miami-Dade and around the world.

The victim, according to investigators, was not a firefighter.

According to a 7News source, things took a tragic turn when someone poured too much fuel into the small tar kettle that was supposed to be fired for demonstration purposes.

Now the district leaders are vowing to get to the bottom of the causes.

In addition, several other agencies are also investigating, including the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Homicide Division, its Arson Investigation Division and the Florida State Fire Marshal.
