Mother of 14-year-old suspect in farmer’s market worker’s murder slams him

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A 14-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting a local farmers market employee during a golf cart theft is in custody.

And sources say he was turned into a police officer by his own mother.

The deadly shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m. June 6 at the Houston Farmers Market off Airline Drive near Sylvester Road.

Surveillance footage showed the two suspects trying to steal a golf cart when Damon Price, 36, approached to stop them. That’s when police say one of the suspects pulled out a gun and opened fire on Price, hitting him at least four times before fleeing.

Authorities said there were four shell casings at the scene.

Houston police said Price’s job was to check on delivery trucks arriving at the building.

Police say the two teens entered through an open door. Security footage also shows the suspects rummaging through goods at the farmers market.

Police said the 14-year-old’s mother took him to the police station to turn himself in. He is currently in custody at the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center.

Authorities said the 14-year-old is expected to make his first court appearance Monday.

No update on second suspect seen on surveillance video.
