Kolkata doctor murder case: STF summoned to probe corruption allegations at RG Kar Hospital | Nation

PTC Newsroom: The Bengal government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to investigate allegations of financial irregularities at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, dating from 2021 to present. The setting up of the SIT comes at a time of national outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at the hospital on August 9.

According to an official statement, the SIT is headed by Inspector General of Police Pranav Kumar. The team also includes Waquar Reza, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Murshidabad Range, Soma Das Mitra, DIG of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Indira Mukherjee, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Kolkata Police. The SIT has been directed to submit its preliminary report to the Bengal government within a month.

The allegations of financial misconduct at the heart of this investigation came to light during the tenure of Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College. Dr Ghosh is a central figure in the ongoing investigation, particularly in relation to his management of the junior doctor’s case. On Sunday, he was questioned for several hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the fourth consecutive day.

Dr Ghosh was asked to explain his actions after the doctor’s death was announced, including the reasons why he contacted the victim’s family and why he did not allow the parents to see their daughter’s body for nearly three hours. In addition, the former principal was asked who had approved the renovation of the rooms adjacent to the seminar hall where the postgraduate intern’s body was found half-naked on August 9.

In a related development, Sanjoy Roy, a volunteer of the Kolkata Police who was arrested in connection with the case, is scheduled to undergo a lie detector test. According to sources, a local court on Monday granted permission to the CBI to conduct the test.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor today. A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the case.
