Sergeant Mike Alexander of the Utah Highway Patrol reported that an incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on August 4th involving a lone motorcyclist traveling north on U.S. Highway 89 near mile marker 78. The rider was traveling on the highway when the accident occurred.

“He failed to negotiate a turn and hit the guardrail,” Alexander said. “He suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.”

According to Alexander, no other vehicles were involved in the accident, making it a one-vehicle accident. He also noted that the motorcyclist’s condition was extremely critical, emphasizing the severity of the injuries sustained in the accident. The police officer noted that the driver was not wearing a helmet.

The Utah Department of Transportation reported that both directions of US 89 were closed at mile marker 78, three miles south of Mount Carmel, as of 9:16 a.m. The closures are expected to remain in effect until about 12:15 p.m.

Sunday’s incident followed a multi-vehicle crash that occurred near mile marker 65 on U.S. Highway 89 around 3:11 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Alexander reported that the incident involved three southbound vehicles on the highway when a northbound vehicle entered their lane, causing the collision.

“The northbound vehicle crossed into the other lane and collided with the first southbound vehicle. Then the other two vehicles were swept away in the chaos,” he said.

One patient was taken to hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. Police are currently investigating whether fatigued driving was a cause of the accident. The investigation is ongoing.
