It is becoming more and more common for many people to want to search for the graves of American celebrities. They do it from coast to coast, there are many websites and pages online dedicated to celebrity graves, history buffs search for historical data found in cemeteries and many books have been written by authors about these final resting places. This author even wrote a book called 100 Graves of Upstate New York (Syracuse University).

In these pages, we’ll explore some of the famous graves in upstate New York that are fully accessible to the public. In this gallery, we look at the graves of 10 Americans, both famous and not so famous, who are eternal residents of the Buffalo area.

And what a list it is.

Here you will find the grave of an American schoolteacher who gave us a national holiday that we celebrate every year with parades. Here you will find the grave of a daredevil woman who defied the mighty Niagara Falls…and won! You’ll meet a Grammy-winning funk and R&B superstar who’s buried in Buffalo. You’ll meet a President of the United States. You’ll meet a man who invented something we all love, and who TIME magazine called one of the 100 most important inventions of the 20th century. And you’ll meet an important Indian chief whose Seneca name translates to “the one who keeps them awake.” And many more.

We will be visiting other areas of upstate New York in future posts. This one highlights Western New York, especially the Buffalo area. All of these stories are incredible.

This gallery continues our articles on famous graves in various parts of upstate New York. This time, we take a look at ten amazing final resting places you can visit in the Buffalo area.

Most, but not all, of these graves are located in the historic Forest Lawn Cemetery, one of the largest cemeteries in New York State. It features thousands of graves, hundreds of fantastic works of funerary architecture dating back to the early 1800s, headstones representing virtually every major American war, and miles of walking trails, wooded areas, ponds, and streams to explore.

On this list, you’ll find the inventor of something we all love and that TIME magazine called one of the 100 most important inventions of the 20th century. You’ll also meet a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the woman who gave us a national holiday that we all celebrate with parades, a man who bequeathed to New York State what would become the heart of one of the Empire State’s three largest state parks, and an important Indian chief whose name Seneca translates to “he who keeps them awake.”

All are easily accessible to the public.
