Braves acquire infielder Zack Short from Red Sox

The Atlanta Braves announced another trade on Thursday. The Braves acquired infielder Zack Short from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations. Short was designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier this week. Atlanta also traded Luis Guilorme to the Angels on Thursday.

Short began the 2024 season with the Mets, playing in 10 games while going 1 for 9 at the plate. The Red Sox acquired him from New York on May 1 in another cash deal. He appeared in two games and was 0 for 7 at the plate. This is a different type of utility player who has experience in the center infield and has played in the outfield in the past. He’s a right-handed hitter and is out of options. Short has appeared in 191 games in his major league career and owns a .169/.262/.299 line with a 55 wRC+ in 469 plate appearances.

When Atlanta traded Guillorme, it appeared that could open the door for David Fletcher to return to the active roster. Instead, it now appears the Braves are going to kick the tires on Short at least initially. Atlanta will begin a three-game series in New York on Friday.
