Zoo Atlanta welcomes new baby lemur – 95.5 WSB

ATLANTA — Zoo Atlanta welcomed a new baby lemur this week.

Born Monday to his mother Sava, the newborn is a crowned lemur, which zoo officials say is an endangered species.

“Zoo Atlanta is thrilled to welcome Sava’s baby. It is always a reason for celebration and hope when a population of an endangered species welcomes another member,” said Sam Rivera, DVM, vice president of animal health.

At this time, it is not known whether the baby is male or female. Zoo officials said that as the weeks pass, the baby’s coloring will indicate its sex.

Crowned lemurs are native to the northernmost tip of Madagascar, the only place in the world home to more than 100 lemur species.

The zoo said threats the lemurs face include habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, slash-and-burn agriculture, and gold and sapphire mining, among other things.

Sava and her baby bond behind the scenes at the zoo’s lemur complex and could soon be seen together in the zoo’s living treehouse. The treehouse is also home to birds and two other species of lemurs: ring-tailed lemurs and black-and-white-collared lemurs. Both of these species are critically endangered.
