Babinski Foundation Rescues Texas Dogs – Brainerd Dispatch

PEQUOT LAKES — The Babinski Foundation Animal Shelter in Pequot Lakes has taken in 54 dogs and puppies rescued from Houston, Texas, following Hurricane Beryl.

The shelter worked with the nonprofit Houston PetSet to deliver much-needed supplies to Houston shelters on July 17 and return the dogs to Minnesota.

In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, Houston shelters are struggling to meet the needs of the thousands of additional animals in their care, according to a press release from Houston PetSet. Many facilities suffered extensive damage and lost vital supplies due to the storm. With thousands of pet owners and foster families still without power, they have been forced to surrender their pets to shelters and rescue groups that have been operating for months without additional kennel space.

The Babinski Foundation Rescue Team drove through the night to deliver 10,000 pounds of dog and cat food, 2,000 pounds of cat litter, supplies and bedding to local groups in need, with distribution coordinated by Houston PetSet. These vital supplies were received by Houston-area organizations including Interfaith Ministries aniMeals on Wheels, Jacinto City Dog Pound Rescue, Wolly Kitten Club and several local street food distributors.

Nonprofit animal welfare groups that brought dogs for transport included Berg Foster Life, SAVE Rescue, Texas Animal Rescue Rehab, Tootsie Dog Rescue, Lola’s Lucky Day, Harris County Pets and the Houston Humane Society.

“Houston shelters have been significantly impacted by Hurricane Beryl, due to increased demand and limited resources,” Donna Sutton, executive director of the Babinski Foundation, said in a press release. “We are thrilled to partner with Houston PetSet to provide much-needed relief to the everyday heroes caring for abandoned and stray animals who need it most.”

Tena Lundquist Faust, Co-President of Houston PetSet, added, “We are so grateful to partners like the Babinski Foundation who not only restocked much-needed supplies, but also returned to Minnesota with 54 dogs from groups in the Houston area. This is what collaboration looks like, and we must continue to build relationships to help our city and county address the homeless pet crisis in Houston.”

Houston PetSet and the Babinski Foundation have partnered regularly over the past few years to send dogs from Houston up north to find adoptive homes. Through unique collaborations like this one, thousands of dogs and cats have been transported to safety.

Donations are welcome and will go directly to shelters and animals affected by the storm. They can be made at houstonpetset.org.

Our newsroom sometimes publishes articles under the byline “staff.” Often, the byline “staff” is used when rewriting basic news stories from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, that require little or no reporting. Sometimes, this byline is used when a news story includes multiple authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported information from a variety of sources. If outside sources are used, this is noted in the story.
