Houston students brave dark, cold, unpredictable waters while swimming in Catalina Channel

Houston – This August, a group of six Houstonians will likely become the first in their age group to swim the Catalina Channel together as a relay team.

The nearly 20-mile strip of open water separates Catalina Island from the Southern California coast. Known for its unpredictable currents and cold waters, the Catalina Channel is considered one of the most challenging open water swims in the world and they’ll accomplish the task without a wetsuit.

The team is led by ultramarathon swimmer Kerry Yonoushonis who has swum the Catalina and English Channels. Yonoushonis’ son Lucca Incerpi will swim the English Channel with her next month. Incerpi will be the only teenager in his relay swimming for a good cause. He supports Mencap, a UK-based non-profit organisation that aims to support people with learning disabilities and their families.

The rest of the team consists of siblings Matthew and Emily Parker and Nate and Natalie Sun. They will be joined by teammate Dhevan Sluiter to help them paddle. The team has been training rigorously for months, including intense swims in frigid waters, strength and endurance exercises, and learning how to navigate the unique conditions of the canal. In addition to their physical training, the students have also learned about potential hazards, such as marine life and changing tides, and mentally prepared for the long hours they will spend in the water.

The swim is scheduled to take place in early August, departing from Catalina Island to the California coast. They will be accompanied by a support boat, to provide them with food, medical assistance if needed and a solid support system.
