Fort Totten man faces 12 years in prison for physically and sexually assaulting woman – Grand Forks Herald

GRAND FORKS – A Fort Totten man was sentenced to 20 years in prison, including eight years probation, in Grand Forks County Court on Wednesday, June 19, for physically and sexually assaulting a woman.

In December 2022, Gandi Alexis Shaw raped a woman who allowed him to stay with her at her Grand Forks home, according to a probable cause statement filed in the case.

On the evening of December 20, 2022, Shaw left the apartment after being upset by a scene from a movie. Hours later, he returned drunk and said he slashed the woman’s car tire because he was upset, but he would pay for that later, the statement said.

The woman said they could talk about it later and accompanied Shaw to the guest room where he was staying. Inside, Shaw tried to strangle her, the statement said.

Shaw forced her onto the bed and his behavior led the woman to believe he was more sober than he appeared in the next room. His level of intoxication was the reason she accompanied him to the guest room, the statement said.

Shaw raped the woman, yelled at her for resisting, told her to stop, and inflicted unbearable pain on her, the statement said.

Shaw, 42, ultimately pleaded guilty to all crimes he was charged with, including three counts of gross sexual assault/sexual battery (Class AA) and malicious damage to property (Class B).

The Class AA charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, but Shaw will serve 12 years of that in the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, receive credit for 518 days already served, and be on probation for three years.

Shaw must undergo a drug screening, register as a sex offender and have no contact with the victim.
