The Houston Rockets are expected to lose their veteran guard this summer

Should the Houston Rockets “go back”?

This is one of the most discussed topics within the team. Should the Rockets make a major move against a winning star now? Or should they stay the course and value continuity?

It’s a difficult decision. Still, even if you opt for continuity, you can’t expect the entire roster to return. The Rockets will inevitably lose – and gain – some players.

It looks like they might lose Aaron Holiday.

The Athletic’s Kelly Iko feels like Holiday is done for.

That makes sense. Holiday signed a one-year, $2.3 million contract with the Rockets last summer. He surpassed his contract. Holiday won’t have significant cash anywhere, but he’ll likely find a moderate raise.

Should the Rockets give it to him?

Ultimately, it’s a fairly inconsequential decision.

Holiday played 16.3 minutes per game last season. The Rockets should replace his 38.7% three-point shooting. This floor spacing was an integral part of a notoriously poor shooting team.

However, this shot can be replaced. Frankly, this might be a better fit coming from a slightly different player. Holiday is a ball handler by nature. Rockets fans were sometimes frustrated by his tendency to command the rock at the expense of younger players like Amen Thompson and Jalen Green.

A player like Malik Beasley or Luke Kennard could better serve this core. Even putting Reed Sheppard in Holiday’s place would be interesting. Sheppard may have a hard time replicating Holiday’s overall impact as a rookie, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him top 38.7 percent from long range.

Regardless, the Rockets should be grateful for Holiday’s time on the roster. Who knows? They might even bring him back.

… Long live the Aaron Holiday era?
