Man in hospital after shark attack near San Diego

A 46-year-old California man was hospitalized after a shark attack Sunday morning, city lifeguards told Scripps News San Diego.

According to police Chief Jon Edelbrock, the incident occurred around 9 a.m. Sunday morning when the man was training with a dozen other swimmers about 100 yards offshore at the Beach Safety Center in Del Mar, California.

He suffered significant injuries to his upper body, left arm and hand and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Lifeguards said he is expected to survive.

In accordance with protocols set by the California Marine Safety Chiefs Association and the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, lifeguards have closed Del Mar beaches to swimming and surfing and posted signs to alert beachgoers of the incident.

The water closure will initially remain in place until Tuesday.
