A murder investigation is underway in Birmingham’s Norwood district

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham police are investigating a homicide in the 3400 block of 17th Avenue North Monday afternoon.

According to spokesman Truman Fitzgerald, officers were called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. for a trespassing incident. Upon arrival, an adult man was found lying in a front yard about three houses away.

The Birmingham Fire Department arrived and pronounced the victim, later identified by police as 37-year-old Demarcus Moore, dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation suggests that there was “domestic unrest” between two brothers. An argument broke out and shots were fired. Investigators are still in the process of determining the original crime scene.

The older brother was located nearby and taken into custody. He is being held in the Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour extended sentence for murder. The public prosecutor’s office is currently examining evidence against him.

Fitzgerald emphasized that the shooting was an isolated incident and that there was no threat to the community at large.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
