Doctors, nurses begin protest after ‘attack’ following patient’s death at Sagar Medical College

Junior doctors at the state-run Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital in Kamarhati near Kolkata began a strike on Friday evening after they were allegedly attacked by the family of a patient who died during treatment. According to a junior doctor, the patient, a middle-aged woman suffering from severe breathing problems, was in critical condition when she was admitted. After her death, a group of about 20 people stormed the hospital and attacked nurses and junior doctors on duty.

“We have repeatedly called for increased security in both the outpatient clinic and wards, but this incident makes it clear that the administration has not addressed our security concerns. Until our demands for adequate security are met, we will continue the stop-work protest,” said the doctor. He further claimed that six people, including nurses, were injured in the attack.

What happened at Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital?

A woman suffering from fever for five days was rushed to Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital. According to the patient’s family, the woman had dengue fever. Although many efforts were made to hospitalize the woman, she could not be saved. This angered the patient’s friends and relatives, who created a ruckus in the hospital and accused him of medical negligence.

They then allegedly attacked the employees. Several hospital staff, including doctors, were injured in the incident. Even a police officer was injured while trying to calm the tension.

Hospital authorities have denied the allegations of medical negligence. A woman with a fever of 5 days was taken to the hospital. According to the patient’s family, the woman had dengue fever. Although efforts were made to treat the woman at the hospital, she could not be saved, authorities said.

A senior officer at Barrackpore Police Commissionerate confirmed that the hospital had lodged a complaint and an investigation was underway. In response to the incident, security was beefed up at the hospital and a police patrol was stationed near the main gate.

Kinjal Nanda, a member of the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum, added: “Despite our repeated calls for improved security measures, the government has failed to act. We will decide our next steps by tomorrow. We don’t want a repeat of the RG Kar situation.”
