MLB execs vote Houston Astros star most likely to be traded

MLB execs vote Houston Astros star most likely to be traded

The Houston Astros played much better this weekend, winning a series against an improved Detroit Tigers club. Even though the Astros have been one of the worst teams in baseball through the first 40 games of the season, they are only 6.5 games out of first place in the American League West.

6.5 is a tall order to come back from, but it’s only May and if Houston gets hot, they’ll be right there with the other top teams in the division.

Deviating from the story, it would make sense if they understood it. With a roster full of star talent on both sides of the baseball, the Astros have proven over the past decade that they are the last team counting.

However, due to injuries, it will be harder than ever.

In case Houston doesn’t figure it out, they could look to move veterans into the team who could help contending teams. At this point in the season, no name has been involved in more rumors than All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman.

An LSU product, Bregman has been a key part of the team’s success. However, Bregman enters free agency at the end of the season, and with no extension in place, this could be a good time to move him.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand asked executives who would be the biggest name moved before the trade deadline.

Of all the stars the leaders responded to, Bregman led the way with five votes.

“Bregman, 30, is in the final year of a five-year, $100 million extension, and although general manager Dana Brown has spoken of his desire to extend him, discussions have not have led to no optimism that a deal will be reached,” Feinsand wrote.

The 30-year-old Bregman has struggled like never before this year, slashing .201/.270/.264 with a home run. His current contract could be the reason for his slow start, but there’s no excuse for the nine-year veteran.
