SEC Football Teams That Shouldn’t, Couldn’t, and Won’t Lecture Atlanta

On Monday, former Alabama football head coach Nick Saban said his picks for the SEC Championship Game are the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns.

Saban’s picks are smart, but at least three other SEC football teams could make the trip to Atlanta. After that group of five, there are five other SEC programs to consider as well.

That leaves six SEC football teams that have no chance of qualifying for the SEC Championship Game.

How was the grouping of five, five and six achieved? A combination of two scoring efforts was used. CBS Sports ranked all 16 head coaches and added rankings of 247Sports measure five categories of position groups for each team. The goal was to define strengths and weaknesses in each area.

The position group categories are: quarterback; skill players (offensive players); offensive line; seven primary and secondary players, plus head coach. For reference, only one team was ranked No. 1 in more than one category. That team is Georgia, and the Bulldogs are No. 1 in every category except offensive line and skill players.

The following team grouping is my projection based on the work of CBS And 247Although I disagree with some of the rankings, I have not made any changes to them.

The rankings indicate that neither the Rebels nor the Tigers are among the top three teams, but in each case, a favorable schedule justifies their inclusion in the group.

The “Could” range includes LSU and Tennessee as the frontrunners, followed by Texas A&M and Kentucky as less likely, and includes Oklahoma as an underdog.

THE no chance To compete in the SEC Championship Game, teams can be viewed in a compressed format. For each of the six group rankings (QB, Skill, OL, Front 7, Secondary, and Coach), teams are ranked from least bad to worst.
