Inspection reveals deteriorated nails caused balcony collapse that killed Houston ‘PR Fairy’ Susan Farb Morris

Investigators continue to work to determine how a balcony collapsed in Galveston, leaving a Houston notable dead over the weekend.

Susan Farb Morris, known as PR Fairy, was tragically killed while on the balcony of a residence in Galveston while she and her family were enjoying Father’s Day weekend.

Inspectors visited the home Tuesday and determined several factors played a role in the structural collapse.

According to Kurt Koopmann of the City of Galveston, inspectors said the bridge was attached to a ledger. He said it appeared that over time the nails had deteriorated and failed to support the imposed weight, causing the fastener to collapse.

Koopmann said a tag on one of the joists was found with a date of 1994, indicating the balcony was built in 1994, the same time the house was built.

Previously, the city said the residence was privately owned and no permits had been issued there, meaning there was no reason for the city to inspect the property.

Morris’ funeral was held Monday, June 17 at Congregation Emanu El’s Barish sanctuary.
